Kings Theatre Company was created in 1998 as a professional, not-for-profit theatre production company whose primary focus was to co-produce in-house theatre events for the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts.
In 2002, Lycian Centre and Kings Theatre Company decided to temporarily suspend performances in order to analyze and evaluate each organization’s operating strategy, examine overall mission and direction, assess strengths and weaknesses and explore the optimal next steps to ensure a future of growth and stability. A series of focus groups, designed to gauge the impressions and recommendations of various sectors of the community, were conducted during this hiatus. At the same time, Orange County and the Orange County Citizens Foundation conducted a formal cultural assessment, based on the opinions of more than 760 civic and cultural leaders in the county. Based on the results of these focus groups, as well as the results of the Cultural Assessment, Kings Theatre Company became the primary operating entity at the Lycian Centre and began presenting shows in October 2004.
Today, Kings Theatre Company has its official 501c3 status and receives state and county funding, as well as corporate support. The organization also has a wonderful list of individual donors who help support its mission (click here for a list of our Friends). The organization presents and produces the majority of the shows being performed at the Lycian Centre, has implemented a monthly film series and a teen theatre workshop series and is an active member of the Orange County Arts Council, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Sugar Loaf Chamber of Commerce, the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, and the Orange County Citizens Foundation.
